Keeping Communities Safe, One Sidewalk at a Time

We Fix Sidewalks takes pride in our work with cities' sidewalk repair programs. Many cities—such as Lakewood and Rocky River—have programs within their building departments to identify and remedy trip hazards on community sidewalks. Proactive repair of hazards helps to keep communities safe and friendly for bikers and walkers alike.

Federal Guidelines and Laws

Plus, the work keeps properties in compliance with the According to the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and the Department of Housing and Urban Development's (HUD) NSPIRE guidelines.

Did you know that according to the ADA, a sidewalk has a "trip hazard" when a crack or joint causes at least 1/4 vertical change? This small height change might be unnoticeable to some but can pose a significant risk of injury when using neighborhood sidewalks.

How Do Sidewalk Repair Programs Work?

It's important to understand that every city has a different structure for its sidewalk repair program. If you have questions or concerns about the sidewalk repair program in your community, we encourage you to connect with the building department. In many cases, however, the sidewalk repair program process follows three steps:

Step 1

The city inspects sidewalks and sends a notice by mail to any property owners with a sidewalk hazard.

Step 2

The notice states a specific deadline for the repair's completion. The property owner can hire a concrete contractor to complete the work and notify the city of its completion.

Step 3

If the property owner does not complete the work by the deadline, the city hires a concrete contractor and sends a bill to the property owner.

Some cities take a more proactive approach to sidewalk repair work. Building departments will routinely inspect neighborhoods and repair trip hazards as they arise. Often, you can Google your city's specific sidewalk repair program details to know the exact procedures they follow.
